Our collection system is made up of a network of 240 miles of pipe throughout the city. Upgrading and rehabilitating many of these pipes is required to eliminate sanitary sewer overflows (SSOs) and meet regulatory requirements. Some of the upgrades are related to increasing the size or capacity of existing pipes to help prevent SSOs, where the projects are strategically located to relieve the system of these capacity issues. Other upgrades are related to repairing existing pipes with defects to prevent rain water and groundwater from entering the system and causing the high flows that lead to SSOs.
