Basin A covers the northern portion of San Mateo, including the North Central, North Shoreview, San Mateo Park, San Mateo Heights, and a portion of Baywood neighborhoods (see map).

Project Description:

San Mateo’s stormwater and wastewater collection system includes a network of 240 miles of pipe divided into five major sewer basins. The Public Works Department’s routine maintenance of the sewer system includes regular cleaning and video inspections of all our sewer mains to maintain the sewer system by removing debris that may cause backups, and to check the condition of the pipes. This work also helps the City understand how to address aging sewer infrastructure, capacity issues, and sanitary sewer overflows.

The 2019-2020 Basin A Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) project includes cleaning and video inspection of approximately 190,050 linear feet of pipe in the public right-of-way and 44, 450 linear feet on private property. Approximately 900 manholes in the public right-of-way are included in the project, along with 110 manholes in easements on private property.

Cracked sewer pipes and laterals, as well as faulty manhole covers, allow rainwater and groundwater to flow into the sewer system. Regular checks are needed to maintain the proper operation of the system, to meet regulatory requirements, and to prevent sewer overflows.

A condition assessment is the first step toward finding cost-effective and technically feasible fixes to minimize inflow and infiltration. CCTV studies are conducted using a remote-controlled camera, and the resulting information is analyzed to identify problem areas in the collection system and design spot repairs.

Presidio Systems, Inc. has been hired by the City to conduct the cleaning and inspection. Affected properties will receive advance notice about the work, and work will be conducted between 8 AM and 5 PM, Monday through Friday.
