D Basin (Central Basin) Sewer Rehabilitation
Project Type:
Collections System – Design
Project Schedule/Status:
Construction is scheduled to begin in early 2026.
Initial design work was completed in Spring 2024. Detailed design work will be completed in January 2026, with several repairs added to the Basin D scope from nearby Basins to repair emergency defects. The project will go through the construction bid process in the first quarter of 2026, with the contract to be awarded shortly after. Construction is estimated to begin in early- to mid-2026.
Project Location:
D Basin covers San Mateo area south of state route (SR) 92 and southwest of Highway 101, with a smaller portion extending to the north side of SR 92. Basin D serves as the collection system for public and commercial centers, such as the Peninsula Golf and Country Club and the San Mateo County Event Center, as well as several residential neighborhoods such as Hayward Park, Sunnybrae, Bay Meadows, Beresford Manor, San Mateo Village and Lauriedale (see map).
Project Description:
San Mateo’s stormwater and wastewater collection system includes a network of 240 miles of pipeline divided into five major sewer basins. The City’s Public Works Department (PWD) performs thorough condition assessments of the sewer system, tracks the condition of the system, and performs routine maintenance of the pipes.
Initial design work was completed in Spring 2024. Detailed design work will be completed in January 2026, with several repairs added to the Basin D scope from nearby Basins to repair emergency defects. Video inspections were conducted between spring 2023 and December 2023 using a remote-controlled camera, to help the City check the condition of the pipes, obtain information that will enable the City to identify problem areas, and plan for future rehabilitation and repair, such as spot repairs, lateral repairs, pipe lining, segment repairs, manhole repairs, etc.
The D Basin Sewer Rehabilitation project included cleaning and video inspection of:
- Approximately 121,400 linear feet of pipe in the public right-of-way
- Approximately 84,000 linear feet in easements on private property,
- Approximately 700 manholes in the public right-of-way and 300 manholes in easements on private property
Repairs and replacements are needed to maintain the proper operation of the system, to meet regulatory requirements, and to prevent sewer overflows.
