Wastewater Treatment Plant Project Update
The Wastewater Treatment Plant construction is making great progress. Upcoming construction activities include concrete work for the structures which will be ongoing through end of 2022. Next week a construction trailer will be delivered and placed on Dale Avenue, next to existing trailers.
Two tower cranes were erected in January 2021 and are now operational. You may notice the tower cranes spinning in the wind when not in operation. This is called “weathervaning” and it allows the tower cranes to move freely with the wind and prevents pressure and force that would otherwise cause excessive pressure on the structure. Crews are committed to keeping our very important project on track and we’re very pleased to see their work progress.
As part of the Wastewater Treatment Plant Project, the Anchor Road Passive Open Space is being prepared to be utilized for temporary construction parking, a decision approved by the City of San Mateo Park & Recreation Commission and San Mateo City Council prior to construction. Limited public parking is available on Anchor Road, and bike and pedestrian access will be maintained. Construction crews will utilize this space until November 2023. Once construction is complete, we’ll remove the temporary construction parking.

Clean Water Program’s UFES Excavation Begins Next Week
Construction on the Clean Water Program’s Underground Flow Equalization System (UFES) project will progress to Phase 3 Excavation during the second week of February. As part of Phase 3, the soil inside the shoring system will be removed. The upcoming work will include additional equipment, heavier construction, and increased truck traffic for hauling soil from the Event Center to and from Delaware Street. Ongoing underground utility locating activities will continue. Approved work hours are between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Monday through Friday.

El Camino Real Sanitary Sewer Rehabilitation Project
Construction of the El Camino Real Sanitary Sewer Rehabilitation Project is underway. This project is part of the City of San Mateo’s Annual Sewer Rehabilitation Program for the overall wastewater collection system. Improvements to the City’s sewer system will help prevent sewer overflows, as well as help the City comply with regulatory requirements.
This project consists of the rehabilitation or replacement of sewer pipeline and rehabilitation of 79 manholes. Most of the repairs will be spot repairs and lining work, with some segment replacements. The rehabilitation work will be performed at multiple sites within the City streets, including some in high-traffic areas. Mitigation measures will be in place to minimize the effects of the project on residents, businesses, commuters, and others. Notifications will continue to be sent prior to the start of construction to ensure occupants and business owners are well informed about the project and the construction schedule.

Basin 4 Collection System Improvement Project
City of San Mateo design consultants completed geotechnical boring and soil testing at various locations throughout the area to support the design of a future sewer capacity improvement project. This project is part of the City of San Mateo’s Annual Sewer Rehabilitation Program for the overall wastewater collection system. Improvements to the City’s sewer system will help prevent sewer overflows, as well as help the City comply with regulatory requirements.
Beginning this month, potholing will be performed at various locations to locate subsurface utilities prior to start of construction. Notifications will be sent prior to the start of construction to ensure property owners and occupants are well informed about the project and the construction schedule.
